GEOFF NICHOLSON

4 March 1953 - 18 January 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Geoff Nicholson.

He was an extraordinary talent who wrote 27 witty, often surreal, sometimes dark, but always entertaining works of both fiction and non-fiction. His debut, Street Sleeper, was short-listed for the Yorkshire Post First Work Award; Bleeding London was short-listed for the Whitbread Prize; and Bedlam Burning was a New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year.

He had a huge zest for life, even when battling health issues, and a greater yet curiosity about the world and everything in it. Alongside his books, his journalism has appeared in The New York Times, Bookforum, Gastronomica, ArtReview, The Los Angeles Times, Black Clock, The Wire, Time Out, Daily Telegraph, Los Angeles Review of Books, Financial Times and Custom Car. Numerous compilations such as The Book of Sheffield and Reports From the Deep End feature pieces by him and he wrote regularly about walking and food, You can find his fantastic archive in the Blog section of this website.

His passing leaves a unfillable hole in the literary world. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all those who knew him.

Geoff Nicholson

Welcome

Welcome to my website. I’m a writer of books, novels and non-fiction, and occasionally a journalist, book reviewer, feature writer and essayist.  I also blog about walking (The Long Lost Walker), food (Psychogourmet) and photography (Nicholson Land). The themes and features of my work include leading characters with obsessions or mildly deranged views on life, interweaving storylines, hidden subcultures and societies, and a lot of black humour.  I’ve written more than 25 books including the Whitbread Prize shortlisted Bleeding London, and the novel What We Did on Our Holidays was made into the movie Permanent Vacation. My most recent book is The Suburbanist.

Nicholson’s novels are distinguished by their quirky, daring imagination.” – Christopher Hart, Sunday Telegraph
